Arctic Drift A Dirk Pitt Novel #20 Dirk Pitt Adventure Clive Cussler Dirk Cussler Books

I love how Clive Cussler combines history and science in the Dirk Pitt adventures. It's a good device to share science and history while entertaining people with suspense and adventure. I enjoyed being reminded of the element Ruthenium and of the failed Franklin Expedition. However, Cussler does not provide the real scientific findings about metal poisoning that drove part of the Franklin's crew insane. Arctic Drift isn't up to Cussler's usual standards. Usually Cussler's story moves right along through the witty dialog of Dirk and sidekick Al, but in this book there's lots of third person narrative where the action slows down. I applaud the attempt to weave climate change and carbon sequestration issues into the story, but the plot stretches believably too thin when Cussler has an energy and minerals oligarch put Canada and the United States on the brink of a shooting war. His understanding of high-level Washington politics just isn't good enough to give NUMA's Admiral Sandecker a new role as vice president of the United States.

Arctic Drift A Dirk Pitt Novel #20 Dirk Pitt Adventure Clive Cussler Dirk Cussler Books Reviews

This was a solid car CD for a medium-long trip. Both generations of Pitts get caught up in shenanegans by Canadian power magnate Goyette. You get the usual cliffhanger situations with excellent historical hook ups. At this point this stuff is pretty formula but (unlike Clancy and Brown) I enjoy the formula and haven't backed off an occasional Cussler. Note on the CD - I don't know how they "abridge" a book like this, but I got to the end of the CDs and realized certain loose ends and developments had never been explained. Just be aware of the drawback of the abridged CDs.
Let me start by saying I'm proud of at least 20 Cussler books sitting on my bookshelves, this author rekindled an passion for reading for me half a dozen years ago. But alas, this is about the first one I'm probably just going to send to the library. Predictable is sadly not the word for it, if you have read (or even seen) Sahara replace EVERYTHING sand with ice and you have Arctic Drift.

I've been enjoying the Oregon Files and tales of Isaac Bell quite a bit, waiting on more of those to come out, but I'm afraid ole' Dirk is about out of new moves and Clive seems bored with him. I'm glad I picked this one up cheap from one of s wonderful pre-owned retailers!
The basic CC novel, a different place, same characters and ending. A fair read, not a real page turner. I no doubt I will continue to read future CC novels.
Cussler has a knack for making the pages turn. He always ties a moment in history to wonderful adventure that are relevant to today. His characters are well developed through years of adventures, but it really helps if you have read all the books in order.
Like many here, I've read every Cussler book (to the best of my knowledge. It can be hard to tell by reading the back blurbs of some of these.)

And, like many, I was iffy when Cussler franchised himself. The new books have been a mixed bag. Paul Kemprecos has been good, at times quite good, but never outstanding. Jack DuBrul has managed to about match Cussler himself. Craig Dirgo was decent as well, but has been replaced by someone better.

The most lackluster was Dirk Cussler. In part, this might be due to his use of Dirk Jr. and Summer. Honestly, these characters come across as naive and simple. They might be smart, but their words never particularly are. Their interactions with each other remind me of Hannah Barbera characters. Predictable, innocent. Never a hint of danger from these two. Neither would harm a fly, and they're worse off for it. Even creepier, their innuendos around each other in the past have come across as incestual.

This book, thankfully, mostly ignores them. They're relegated to the same role as the Trout's in the Kurt Austin books (mind you, I typically find the Trout chapters to be dull and almost entirely skippable - the books come to a complete halt with them. The same is true of the Dirk and Summer passages here.) In fact, I'd say that you could swap the two pairs names, change "sister" to "wife," "brother" to "husband," and no one would know the difference. Heck, Gamay and Summer are both supposedly extremely tall readheads... Just skim these chapters quickly and get on to the meat of the book.

Anyway, enough of a rant on them. They're quite secondary here, as Dirk Sr., despite his desk job, does most of the adventuring. It's a shame, in some ways. Dirk Jr. could have easily replaced Dirk Sr. Just, you know, give him some form of an edge. Make us think he could hurt a man, or even stare someone down. He's too much of a do-gooding wuss, and Dirk Cussler has, in turn, relied upon the original Dirk Pitt.

But he did so fairly entertainingly. Easily his best.
I love Clive's books. Nobody writes them like Cussler but his political fad fettish ruined this one for me. I managed to get through his metric days with a conversion chart next to me. I've now arrived in the Dirk Pitt series at his apparent global warming awakening (that's pretty much why this book was written) and it's going to be harder to stick with it. It's distracting regardless of where you stand on the issue because it comes off as contrived and because of that, hard to follow.
